Contemporary Open-Plan German Kitchen Extension in Huddersfield
When the homeowners began planning a rear extension to their property in Marsden, they saw it as an opportunity to completely rethink how their kitchen worked. The existing space lacked storage, the layout felt restrictive and the overall style no longer reflected how they wanted to live.
Their goal was to create a larger, modern kitchen that would sit at the heart of a new open-plan living and dining space. The finished result is a striking German kitchen that combines contemporary design, practical storage solutions and a highly functional layout tailored to people who love to cook and entertain.
Designing a Kitchen Around an Open-Plan Extension
Located close to Slaithwaite, the Colne Valley and the Peak District National Park, this Marsden kitchen project was designed as part of a wider rear extension that transformed the flow of the home.
Creating an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space was a key objective from the outset. The new layout centres around a spacious island, helping to define the kitchen zone while maintaining the openness of the room.
As with many successful open-plan designs, the island naturally improves movement throughout the space. Anyone walking through the room can do so without interrupting somebody cooking, making it particularly practical for busy family life or entertaining guests.
A dedicated breakfast bar also provides a place for informal dining, morning coffee or simply keeping the cook company while meals are being prepared.
Industrial-Inspired Finishes with Contemporary Character
The kitchen features the ever-popular Nobilia Riva range in Concrete Slate Grey, creating a bold contemporary aesthetic with plenty of texture and visual impact.
Concrete-effect finishes continue through the matching laminate worktops, creating a seamless appearance that makes the island feel almost as though it has been formed from a single block of concrete. To soften the scheme and introduce warmth, a Havana Oak breakfast bar was incorporated into the design, perfectly complementing the open shelving throughout the space.
The homeowners also sourced their own quartz worktop for the sink run and selected a bespoke glass splashback, adding further individuality to the finished design.
The result is a kitchen that feels modern and architectural while remaining welcoming and practical for everyday use.
Practical Storage for Serious Home Cooking
Functionality played a major role in shaping the final design. The homeowners spend a significant amount of time cooking and wanted every aspect of the kitchen to be easy and enjoyable to use.
A pull-out larder provides organised storage for dry goods while making everything easily accessible, including items stored lower down within the cabinet. The large island incorporates three generous 800mm-wide drawer sets, ensuring cooking utensils, pans and preparation tools can be stored exactly where they are needed most.
Integrated waste separation helps simplify recycling and keeps clutter hidden away, while dedicated spice storage provides a practical home for the large collection of dried herbs and seasonings used regularly within the kitchen.
Together, these features create a highly organised workspace that supports everyday cooking without compromising the clean appearance of the design.
Thoughtful Features That Enhance Everyday Living
Several carefully considered design details help elevate the kitchen beyond simple functionality.
The large island and breakfast bar encourage social interaction, allowing family and friends to gather comfortably while meals are being prepared. Open shelving above the sink area provides a place for cookbooks, decorative accessories and personal touches, helping the space feel individual and lived-in.
The kitchen also features a Bosch Series 4 oven with matching combi microwave, an Elica downdraft induction hob, a black Schock Quadro undermount sink and a matte black tap. The downdraft extraction system maintains clean sightlines throughout the room while allowing the design to remain open and uncluttered.
These details combine to create a kitchen that feels both highly practical and beautifully considered.
